often with last minute calls ups, especially for friendlies, it can be more about making up the numbers in training than anything else. a senior player not called up already could have been given a few days off or might be abroad training with his team and often it would be a bit pointless bringing in an older player to make up the numbers when he wont have much chance of playing.

Lingard, an out and out striker, is called into the England squad to replace an out and out striker ( for a relative meaningless friendly too ). Whereupon the negative posters on here complain but do not come up with a credible alternative who is an out and out striker.

Is Lingaard over Redmond a big shock, being as though Redmond doesn't start every week for Norwich.
I am surprised that Puncheon hasn't had a look though.

Lets remember that the player called up has been called up to play in one game.
Lingard arguably is the most in form winger available after playing very well for United the last few weeks, Roy would have also had a glowing report from Southgate on him so his inclusion is not that surprising at all

Oh look squeaky has turned up to assist a mate.
I don't profess to be a football know it all. However I can see why the likes of Redmond, Saha and Puncheon are not called up to replace a missing striker and instead an up and comer like Lingard is.
I wonder who sneaky would choose if he did not have a mate thinking for him?

Austin has been out injured, just returned and hasn't played well or scored.
Redmond, admittedly is inconsistent, but has still managed to bag 4 goals this season.
